The most interesting concept that I’ve learned so far in this course is abnormal psychology. Anything that causes people to suffer distress and/or prevents them from functioning in their daily lives is considered abnormal. In ancient times psychological disorders were treated by trephination, exorcism, being caged like animals, being beaten, burned, castrated, mutilated, or transfused with animal’s blood. Fortunately, now we have more humane ways of treating such disorders. Abnormal psychology is the most interesting because understanding abnormality is essential to understanding humans period. Mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders are more common then we think. Prudential algebra is a process by which we can quantify important variables to consider when making a decision. It provides a straight-forward way to choose between alternatives based on a quantifiable result. This is very useful because it helps you make decisions without so much biases and an increase in accuracy. I would definitely be able to use this outside the classroom. For instance, I plan on using prudential algebra in making my graduate school decision. Even though it can be time consuming, it’s worth it when making a big decision like that. The topic I found least interesting/useful was the sex differences in brain functioning. I just didn’t see how it could really help me grow as a person or help in the future somehow. The other concepts discussed in class like: leadership, decision making, or abnormal psychology could all be applied to my personal life and I could use what I learned outside of class, but when it came to the sex differences in the brain it was just information that I’ve heard a thousand
