I first learned about VCOM early in my undergraduate studies when my cousin, who is a physician, told me about it and said that he met a number of knowledgeable physicians who studied at VCOM. This prompted me to research VCOM, and upon doing so, I discovered that my personal values align with the mission of VCOM. Firstly, VCOM’s dedication to ongoing medical research is, in my opinion, the key to the continued growth of medicine. By highlighting research efforts to grow the boundaries of medicine, VCOM guarantees that the physicians it trains not only practice medicine, but actively contribute to its flourishing. As a physician who had the honor of studying at VCOM, I will never make this mistake. I will make sure to actively involve my patients in any decisions and I will make certain that they understand what I am recommending and why I am doing so. When a patient is diagnosed with a condition and they begin treatment, it can often be quite terrifying. The patient-centered care that VCOM teaches will impart onto me the knowledge of how to help patients stay involved in their own care, which will bring them comfort while also helping them contribute to their own recovery. Finally, VCOM’s goal to provide healthcare for those who are medically underserved aligns with a major career goal of mine.
