World War I Project: Valcartier Training Camp
Valcartier training camp was a training base for the Canadian contingent during world war 1 (1914). This camp was the reason our 36 000 soldiers were ready and prepared for the Great war. Nowadays this camp is a influence for our soldiers now and makes a mark for the military in our country. In 1914 The camp was ordered to be made by Sam Hughes, the Minister of Militia and Defense during the period of the time. So the training base was made to train the first contingent of men to leave for England in 1914 for World War 1. It was made right outside of Quebec City the name of the city was Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, so the reason of that city being the area it was, there was

Examples would be a section where you can practice shooting with rifles on targets as well to help with your aim. They also had an area where it was filled with sand to get them used to how the war trenches would be. They lived in little tents with little food that always had run out pretty fast, they also had to get their own freshwater from the lake. Later on they had discovered the water was polluted and they had not known about that and diseases would spread fast all around the camp. Now valcartier is one of the many camps that Canada's uses. Now not only does it train soldiers like they did in the past it also serves as a base for a cadet program which help trains the future troops and leaders of our country. Something the camp worked recently on was helping Afghanistan victims of war rebuild their homes and be safe which over 1900 soldiers contributed. The base also has a defence research and development Canada location which conducts military research for the Canadian armed forces the public safety other government departments. Another thing is CFB valcartier is home to the army cadet summer training which trains the royal canadian army cadets of the eastern region. It works under the National Defense Act, and encourages more cadets to get involved for the safety of their land. It trains young teens how to use GPS’s, camping survival skills and a lot more.
