The Value of College for Today's Youth Introduction Today’s youth are much the target of discussion when it comes to their plans for the future. Youth are included in the center of conversation regarding standards of education, HIV and AIDS, mass incarceration of youth, and violence in the big cities of America. Most of these issues disproportionately impact America’s youth who have already found themselves involved in illegal activity. What is more frightening, is the fact that many youth view their involvement in illegal activity as a viable way to make a sizeable income, which leads them to the reason why many of today’s youth are no longer convinced that college is a viable choice.

Other statistics pertaining to African-American males is that they typically get suspended from school 2.5 times more than their white counterparts. This could possibly be the explanation for why their reading scores tend to be lower than any other racial group. Black males tend to make up a small percentage of college students; those that do attend have a high potential of not graduating. If we look at our prison system, we will find that African-American males are incarcerated in record numbers, suggesting that for every three blacks, one will definitely spend some time in prison. There is also a large number of black youth that get arrested and live in poverty. These are some of the reasons why African-American males engage in illegal activities in lieu of securing a legitimate job. They are often the victims of child abuse and homicide, “which is the leading cause of death among African American youth ages 15-24”
