The 1940 film Grapes of Wrath accurately describes the working conditions of migrating families during the Depression. The Joad’s family was a fictional family that depicted the low wages and poor living conditions of the migrant workers during the Depression. The Grapes of Wrath was historically accurate for the entire film. The family’s during the Depression would pack everything across country and sleep wherever they could find a space to rest their tired bodies.
Painting is like keeping a diary on canvas. Art expresses ones feelings in ways words cannot. This is true for protagonist Melinda Sordino in the Laurie Halse Anderson novel about teenage rape, Speak. Anderson uses trees, mainly Melinda’s paintings and sculptures of trees, to chronicle Melinda’s growth in the novel. Instead of Melinda saying exactly how she felt all the time in the book, Anderson uses Melinda’s paintings to keep a diary of her emotions.
His use of dark colors and shades in this painting casts a type of ambivalent view, their worn and tattered clothing cause the viewer to sympathetic to them and what their perceived state is. Although the entire painting is monochromatic with his predominant use of colors such as blacks and browns, the features of the characters in this painting are clear and realistic because of his use of the Chiaroscuro technique to fashion the faces of the characters. The figures are symmetrically distributed on the canvas which makes the composition very balance utilizing all the positive space. Traditionally post-impressionist art compositions are bursting with color and depth, but Van Gogh use of color though not traditional still manages to create the experience viewers would get from viewing post-impressionist art. “Post Impressionists also emphasized their emotions and personal responses in their paintings, which consequently were more expressive and figurative in nature.”
Van Gogh was regarded as one of the greatest Dutch painters. He didn’t become popular until after his death and only recently. His use of vivid colors and emotions changed the way people and gave more knowledge of what art really was. Even though the painting was ruined, many other artists have created their own reinterpretation of his well known painting called “The Painter on the Road to Tarascon”.
The second painting that I will analyze was painted in 1885 by another Dutch artist, Vincent Van Gogh, named The Potato Eaters. Painted during the Postimpressionism period, Van Gogh portrays a small farm family that is overworked
The first difference between Monet’s garden and Picasso’s garden is artist’s background information. Background information is a general fact of the artist himself, which will provide audiences the better interpretation of painting toward each unique painting style. Claude Monet, French artist, was one of the pioneers of impressionism in 1860s, mostly created his artworks in a well-known “plein-air” painting style (Perry, 1927). Impressionism, in fact, derived from his artwork entitled “Impression, Sunrise” which gave its impression in terms of conveying feeling to most viewers as they were in the same situation (Dempsey, 2002). In general, impressionist art focuses on capturing the natural surroundings in a brief moment and shows in a rough style of painting (Grant, 2010).
During late 1886 and early 1887 Van Gogh created a self-portrait of himself in a grey hat. This self-portrait was a lot different than the first one he created earlier in the spring of 1886. One of the main things that stand out from this portrait is the color. The pallet he used is a lot lighter compared to the one he previously used. It contains pure colors that resemble an impressionistic style.
The young protagonist, Griet, holds a lowly status within society, but unlike most working class families during this time, Griet has an eye for art and beauty (Chevalier 5). This can be seen when Johannes Vermeer questions her reasoning for separating vegetables. Her response piques Vermeer’s interest. “’The colors fight when they are side by side, sir.’ He arched his eyebrows, as if he had not expected such a response” (Chevalier 5).

Vincent made his art stand out from the rest,using more color than the traditional darker colors. One of his modern day impacts is his technique of painting with his unique brushstrokes and painting methods.
Searching for a painting that really spoke to me was hard, I was searching for quite a while, until I found Bedroom in Arles. There are many things in this painting that would catch a viewer 's eye; the reason the painting caught my eye was because it was much more vibrant and colorful that all the other artworks I saw, that is why it attracted me. “Bedroom in Arles created” in 1888 by the word renowned artist Vincent Van Gogh was painted to represent himself, who he was as a person, and the life he lived. That is what Van Gogh is trying to convey to the viewer in this painting, he did this with the use of vibrant colors, the thick brushstrokes used, the many different and odd parts of this painting, and the texture of the items in the painting. Van Gogh’s use of color, and his bold color choices is what really attracted me to this painting, it stood out like a sore thumb from all the other paintings.
The way artists have used colour,style or reflection to express themselves in their work and the impact of this on my own work. Through a formal analysis and the investigation of style and symbolism in Van Gogh's “Wheatfield with Crows”(Image C) and “ The Old Tower in the Fields” (Image D) one will be able to see that his powerful use of the symbolism adds meaning to his emotive work and his expressive style creates unity throughout his work. Whereas Graciela Bombalova expresses herself through her perceptual style and extreme use of juxtaposed colour in her artwork, “Pastel Portrait of a Boy”(Image F) William Kentridge differs to Van Gogh's and Graciela, as he does not use a traditional medium, but rather interactives with the viewers through the unique use of reflection, as seen in his work, “Medusa”(Image E). Vincent van Gogh was seen as a failure throughout his lifetime.

In art, color is very personal and subjective, and gives different meaning to different people. However, in this Van Gogh piece, it is clear what the colors are used for. The blue found in the man’s overalls suggests uneasiness, melancholy and distress. Blue is unanimously associated with sorrow, and it is clear that in this piece, the subject is suffering immensely. The color is used to compliment the feelings the audience perceives from this artwork.
