Divergent, a novel by Veronica Roth, is about the adventures of a 16 year old girl named Beatrice. It is set in the future Chicago after some dramatic apocalypse has happened. The civilization there is based on 5 factions. These factions run the political and social systems is Chicago. Each faction is based on a certain idea; Beatrice starts out as abnegation but in the book we find out she is divergent. The main plot of this book is about the Edurite trying to take over the city, they are the smart ones. They try to use a serum that controls people 's minds. Beatrice is not affected by this serum because she is divergent and that makes her invulnerable. The theme of the book is being different is what gives people power. In the part of the book where all the divergent are put under control, this is where the authors opinion is pretty obvious. Tris’s mother said “factions are set up to make their members a certain way”. If you are controled by higher ups you are definitely not powerful. Being controled shows that you are weak and need to be different. So Beatrice being divergent makes her mind more powerful. Not being a standard person of society lets people have more power and control in their lives. Veronica Roth also shows being different is what gives you power by making references to the bible. The Edurite is kinda like the snake in the Garden of Eden. Edurites plan is to take down the Abnegation like kind alike the snake does to Eve in the bible. The whole story kinda resembles it. As seen in the acknowledgements in the Veronica Roth seems to be a very religious person. So the idea of referring to the bible doesn’t seem to crazy.
