Are scientists responsible for their creation actions? Scientists discover and invent new things frequently, with most having the intention of bettering or aiding humanity. However, what if a scientist's creation that was intended for good got the complete opposite application, causing mass unintended harm? Should the creator be responsible? Victor sure does take responsibility for his actions and burdens it all on himself, never sharing his mistakes. Victor develops throughout the book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley from a young boy fascinated by alchemy and then fascinated by modern science into a guilt-ridden man. He creates a monster out of his desire for the secret of life that ends up killing his best friend Henry, his father, brother, and sister/wife Elizabeth. Rushed with guilt and self-disgust because of his hideous creature's devilish actions, Victor could not tell anyone until he had captured a friend. Cutting himself off from the world entirely, Victor’s only obsession was his creation and its demise. Victor states, “Again, I vow vengeance; again, I devote thee, my miserable fiend, to torture and death. Never will I give up my search until he or I perish." After everything Victor had lost because of his miserable creation, the only thing desired was the monster's timely demise, feeling like he had to make it up to his perished family. For example, Victor says, “Yet at the idea that the fiend should live and be triumphant, my rage and vengeance returned, and like a mighty tide, I overwhelmed every other feeling." Overwhelmed with guilt and remorse, Victor forgets everything he once knew, giving the monster full control over his feelings. By the end of the novel, Victor had chased his creation extremely northward into the Arctic Ocean, failing to capture the fiend by kayak. Luckily, he was picked up by a sailor named Robert Walton, with whom Victor would share his story and unfortunately perish aboard his ship. Victor went from a sympathetic, science-invested young man
