I am going to write an essay about the “Super Prison”, Alcatraz. As you may know, the government made a prohibition to ban all alcohol. That didn’t workout so well for the rest of the world. The gangsters and the thieves and all of the other bad guys, either started making the crops to make alcohol, or they bought it from other places/countries. They became unstoppable, and everybody was afraid of them.
In the article “Escape From Alcatraz” by Deborah Hopkinson, she describes Alcatraz as a tough and fear-inducing prison by explaining the precautions took to keep prisoners locked up and describing the rough punishments. On page 8, the author gave us an example of a precaution by stating, “Cell blocks were turned into fortresses meant to hold those who had tried- and sometimes managed- to break out of other prisons.” This shows how the government had to take extra steps to make sure this prison was inescapable. The author then talks about what were to happen if one broke the rules by writing, “Men who broke the rules faced harsh punishment, the most feared of which was solitary confinement” (page 9). This quote shows that even these powerful
He served time in an Atlanta prison until August 1934, when he was moved to Alcatraz in San Francisco because the inmates at the Atlanta prison felt Capone was getting special treatment. Capone remained at Alcatraz until his health went downhill. The syphilis he contracted at a young age was causing issues with this health. He was becoming confused and disoriented. Alcatraz was constructed to house the most dangerous criminals of the nation in a facility deemed to be inescapable. The events of May 2nd, 1946 proved that the prison wasn't as advanced and escape proof as rumored to be and staff never expected an escape to be possible, thus lowering their guard and allowing this battle to escalate farther than it should have. In the wake of the tragic conflict, fourteen guards and one inmate were left injured, while two correctional officers and three inmates lay dead after being shot. Of the three remaining escapees, Thompson and Shockley were later executed together in the Gas Chamber for their role in the murder of Officer Miller, and Carnes, the youngest inmate to ever be sent to Alcatraz was spared from execution due to his age but received an additional 99-year sentence. None dared try to escape from Alcatraz for the next ten

The plan to escape out of Alcatraz was made by four men Frank, the Anglin brothers, and Allen Clayton West, west claimed that he was the master mind behind the plan; he also was the key to the escape. Allen had a prison job, he worked as maintenance which gave him the advantage of moving through the cell blocks and he was able to see an open vent in the ceiling and though he might be able to get out of that vent. All of them had cells near each other which allowed them to communicate with one another at any time, behind these cells was a rarely used utility corridor filled with pipes once they where there it was easy for them to climb three stories onto the roof shaft and from the roof of the cell house down to the water and off the rock, but first they had to find a way out of there ells and into the corridor, they had to make the vents in the back of their cells bigger so they can fit through them. To break through they started with whatever they could find, they also had to conceal the noise of them breaking the concrete, and they worked while other inmates played music. After several months they were finally able to fit though the vents, they used cardboard to make covers where they drilled.
Al Capone was a clever man. He could get out of any situation with the police. Although he was arrested many times throughout his lifetime. Alcatraz Island, an island located in San Francisco Bay in San Francisco, California, has held many roles since its discovery. Originally, when Spanish explorers first discovered this island in the 16th century they gave it the name Alcatraces, meaning "pelican" or "strange bird" (Finckenauer). Alcatraces later transformed into the English-favored word Alcatraz.
