The Santa Clara Vietnamese population is the second largest community in the nation. From 1980, the population grew from over 11,000 Vietnamese residents to over 134,000 in 2010. At almost 8%, the Vietnamese population is the second largest Asian group, only surpassed by Orange County. The Vietnamese community experiences many social disparities. The 2011 Santa Clara County Vietnamese Community Assessment provides an extensive report on the health status of the Vietnamese America residents. The Vietnamese Community Assessment will be reviewed through two perspectives. The assessment will first be reviewed through the perception of a grant or program proposal. Next, with community organizing criteria, the assessment will be analyzed through a community organizer standpoint. Recommendations will then be made on how to utilize the results of the assessment to increase community capacity for empowerment and change. The goals of this review are to compare and contrast the assessment from different viewpoints, ethical considerations, assumptions, and results. When reviewing the assessment in a grant or program proposal perspective, there are few criteria. The assessment must discuss the background and the social determinants of the Vietnamese community. The data collected determined that Vietnamese adults are diagnosed with liver cancer at four times the rate of any other ethnicities and races in the county. More adults are also diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension than any other races. Those that were born in Vietnam had the highest rate of tuberculosis infection in the county. Beyond physical illnesses, 40% of Vietnamese adults reported that mental health problems have interfered with daily activities. The report also discussed other health problems such as other types of cancer and hepatitis
