Vincent Van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland on March, 30 1853. His father, Theodorus Van Gogh, was a pastor, his mother, Anna Cornelia Carbentus, was an artist. He was born one year after his brother who was a stillbirth. He was brought in a very religious and cultured environment. When Van Gogh was 15 he was forced to leave school and go to work. He went to work at his uncle's art dealership. At this time he was fluent in French, German, English and Dutch. He believed his true calling was to preach the gospel. He decided sometime between 1860 and 1880 to be an artist. In 1873, van Gogh transferred to Groupil Gallery.He came to enjoy english culture. He became a fan of Charles Dickens and George Eliot. In 1878 Van Gogh moved to a coal mine south of belgium to work as a preacher and a coal miner, he preached to the sick and drew pictures of miners and their families. The church committee became displeased by his style of preaching. He then left his job as a preacher in belgium. He continued to have a tragic Love life falling in love with his cousin, and then Clasina Maria, who was a prostitute. she became his companion and his model. She soon went back to prostitution after quitting for Van Gogh, He became depressed and in 1882 left her after his family threatened to cut off his money. He then moved to Drenthe, and lived a nomadic life for a few weeks all the while continuing painting. His paintings during this period of his life were somber toned.
