Writing can be an effective way in persuading an audience. Creating a connection to the audience is a difficult task, but if rhetorical writing is used correctly, one's writing can be impactful and effective. The authors, Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt, of "The Coddling of the American Mind" use rhetorical strategies to evoke interest, and to assist in bringing across meaning to the reader. Some of the effects used include data, quotes from ancient philosophers, and specific word connotation. The rhetorical strategies used by Haidt and Lukianoff are for the most part unsuccessful in convincing college administration that shielding students does more harm than good.
First, Michael D. Gallagher, the president and CEO of Entertainment Software Association argues that video games don’t cause people to be violent. According to the statistics that the FBI released Gallagher states, “youth violence has declined in recent years as computer and video game popularity soared” (Gallagher 1). Gallagher goes on to quote from the U.S Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, “The state has not produced substantial evidence that violent video games cause psychological or neurological harm to minors” (Gallagher 1). Second, a news editor for the Science & Technology section in www.thelocal.se disputes that video games ‘don’t make kids violent’. According to, the Swedish Media Council who reviewed over a 100 articles on videogames and violence, “there is a clear, statistically significant link between violent computer games and aggressive behavior but, many of the studies used different ways to measure aggression, many of which lack a clear connection to violent behavior ” (News Editor 1).

In addition, this argument is further evidenced by another quote from kain’s article: "A look at global video game spending per capita in relation to gun death statistics reveals that gun deaths in the United States far outpace those in other countries—including countries with higher per capita video game spending. (Kain Para 27). " this further demonstrates how video games don't have any relation to real world violence since America has one of the highest amounts of shootings in the world, even though other countries sell way more video games than we
Over a million violent crimes are commited each year. Some of these crimes are mass shootings by people you could never imagine to be the ones doing it. These people are teens that attend high school just like their fellow classmates. With these young people commiting these crimes, many wonder if video games with blood and gore are driving these teens to commit these crimes. These critics, mainly comprised of parents and other responsible adults, don’t agree with what the video games portray.
