Two students Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, only 17 and 18, shot up their school until they eventually shot themselves. They killed 12 students and a teacher and injured more than 20 more. (CNN Library.) But what caused them to do this? Evidence shows both shooters were avid fans of the popular game “Doom” released in 1993. In Doom, you kill demons, devils, monsters, and even humans and the graphics are very bloody, with opponents often exploding in a shower of blood when killed. It's also one of the first ‘first person shooter’ games on console, which put the player in the perspective that they are actually in the game, which makes it even worse for the controversy that it causes violence. Not only did these kids play doom but evidence suggests that they constructed a modded version of the game that had targets that did not shoot back and playable with 2 characters and made a level which was based on the high school's floor plan, a sort of ‘training ground’. ‘ “Investigators at the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, which flags hateful and racist Web sites, have uncovered several home-made versions of Doom found on Harris' now-defunct Web site. "Klebold was hurting inside while Harris wanted to hurt people," Fuselier says. Harris was not merely a troubled kid, the psychiatrists say, he was a psychopath.” ‘(Fuselier, Slate Magazine). Their original plan was to detonate a propane bomb within the school and then kill fleeing survivors, and lastly blow up cars so no one could escape. If they have succeeded they would have committed one of the largest terrorist acts in American history, not just a mere school shooting but a tragic event that killed hundreds, to mentally scare and threaten the security of American people. That doesn't sound like video game inspiration, It sounds like terror and hate. It sounds like mental illness, not just the result of shooting virtual demons. Studies done with multiple children, mostly boys, showed that video games had little effect on their behavior than what it already was before the test. The experiment had children of multiple backgrounds
