Childhood is the basis of your future personality. If it’s not a great one you may not develop one properly. In the adventure book, Violet Evergarden by Kata Akatsuki, Violet is trying to get a job as an auto-memory doll after an intense war. She never learned the concept of emotions so she never developed a personality properly. The author uses the conflict between character versus society, character traits, and mood to show that Violet being upbringing in the military made her develop a lack of empathy in her character. Violet's lack of human emotion is illustrated by the author's use of character versus society. “Words can have different interpretations. What one says isn't the whole truth”(Akatsuki 45). Violet was told this by a comrade of hers, after she misinterpreted the meaning of the common phrase ‘I love you’. Everyone surrounding Violet at the time was stunned by her inhuman questions, like “I want to know what I love you means…”(Akatsuki 15). Akatsuki's portrayal of Violet’s inability to shed a tear, which is a normal emotion for most individuals, demonstrates her emotional disconnection, and struggle to comprehend others feelings. Moreover, as Violet grapples with her emotional limitations, she expresses her want for comprehension, confessing, “ I lack the ability to grasp the emotions of others. However… I yearn to comprehend. I yearn to fathom the depths of people's feelings” (Akatsuki 117).
