Rape, sexual assault, and virginity are the topics of this novel in more traditional countries like Haiti. They believe a girl who is not a virgin is not pure or clean. It is really serious for girls to keep their virginity until marriage in these counties. This novel goes over a story about a girl named Sophie Caco and her mother Martine Caco. It is shocking to see how people care about virginity so much. This extremist idea can be seen on the mother who checks her daughter's virginity by putting her finger inside their vagina on the weekly basses. This shows how virginity is deeply embedded in the culture of a country.

Martine follows her mother footsteps and tells Sophie that she wants to check her virginity. It is really embracing for Sophie to let her mother touch her and make sure that she kept her virginity.
