Illustrations and Self-Evaluation about “Vision”
As the dean of the law school “in the future,” professor McConnaughay impressed SHP participants by emphasizing “vision” as a requirement for attending STL in his welcoming speech. Vision is by nature “the ability to see” and “the area that one can see” (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English). To make a further explanation, in the context of Dean McConnaughay’s speech, it refers to an ability of making insightful expectations and flexible responses to future changes. Specifically, there are three layers of it from the perspectives of the development of the world, China, and individuals. Following each illustration, there will be an evaluation in myself concerning these aspects of vision.

I have been to Taiwan and America as a short-term exchange student, whose legal systems are more or less different from Chinese legal system. However, there are not only differences that I could notice among these legal systems, but also the similarities among them. For example, the jury system in American law is different from Chinese legal practice, but both of the two legal systems value procedure justice. By comparing different legal systems in the world, I gradually learn more from the world that are beyond my experience. However, while I could notice the changes in the world, I have no round picture in mind about how to adapt myself to them. In other words, I am not flexible enough to respond the changes in the world immediately. Compared with earning wealth and fame for myself, I would rather make contributions for the development of the whole society, because that can bring me more sense of satisfaction. Thus, the future prosperity of China concerns me. Apart from that, the rapid development of Chinese economy has a profound influence on China’s relationship with other countries and many aspects within itself, among which law takes an essential place. I took participated in many volunteering activities, from taking care of autism children and left behind children to teach adults English. From these experiences I developed a strong sense that although economic prosperity plays an important role in society, yet what makes the public have the sense of happiness relies on the solid protection of their rights entitled by various laws in China. In short, as far as I am concerned, I have the vision of China’s future development and its role in the world and what is more essential is that I would like to spare no efforts to make my own contributions for the prosperity of the whole
