Vladek has changed since the war, but what caused this change? In the book Maus by Art Spiegelman, someone named Vladek Spiegelman changes a lot throughout the story. Art began to start a book about his father's life. Vladek Spiegelman is Art's father and went through the Holocaust. The Holocaust also known as World War 2 was the mass genocide of the Jewish race and many others. Vladek was somehow able to survive. Vladek had been changed by what he lost in the war.
When Vladek loses everything, he becomes a hoarder. Vladek loses all of his things during the holocaust. This leads to Vladek becoming a hoarder, according to the book. On page 93 Mala mentions that he won't let anything go. “He won't even let throw out the plastic pitcher he took from his hospital room last year!” This shows that Vladek does have an obsession with collecting objects to hold onto. Vladek lost a lot of his things. An example can be found on page 85. “One time I had to deliver 10 or 15 kilos of sugar…” “What was I supposed to say? For this, I could really hang!” This shows the bare minimum that they had. They had so little that when they had sugar they were threatened to hang. This shows why Vladek has begun to hoard.

This is caused by his time in the work camps. In the work camps, Vladek had no food. This can be seen on page 43. “Yes! So it has to be. Always you must eat all what is on your plate.” He also lost a lot of money in the camps and in the ghetto. This is why Vladek never likes to spend money. This can be seen on page 73. “You and Mala! You both think money grows on bushes. I’ll fix it myself!” This stands as evidence that supports the claim that Vladek doesn't like to spend money because of what he lost in the work camps. This had led to be aggravating for the people around him because he was always rude when the topic was brought
