Smolla writes about the First Amendment in his essay, "Speech Overview". He discusses what freedom of speech is, why Americans hold the First Amendment in such high regard, and how it can be conflicting to many American's "social instincts". The main idea that Smolla is arguing is that Americans embrace freedom of speech and individuality, even though it may cause conflict. He recognizes that some limitations must exist, but the freedom to express our thoughts is the American way. Smolla points out that many controversial items are approved due to the first amendment, even though they conflict with patriotism.
Science Fiction Comparison When people’s lives are stripped away, and communication is lost, is the time when people prize companionship and affection the most. They crave to go back to the way their lives were before and something that was small before the destruction of their livelihood, is now what they depend on for their happiness. Both Rye and Dr. Jenkins experience longing for their pasts and they do anything to satisfy their nostalgia. In “Speech Sounds” and “The Portable Phonograph”, Octavia Butler and Walter Van Tilburg Clark describes the greed that the characters face, that causes destruction with both symbolism and the similarities of the characters.

In their political speeches at the 1992 National Conventions, Mary Fisher and Elizabeth Glaser addressed their personal and emotional experiences that AIDS has had on them and their loved ones. Glaser presents the argument of Bush not caring by saying “ They don’t hear because they don’t want to listen.”

This article was sent to me by my professor, Dr. Conradi, and is also available using EBSCOhost. This article was reader friendly and introduces a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who is using multiple inclusion models in the elementary school to work with classroom teachers to provide in-class services to her speech-language students. The article shows how flexible and willing the SLP is to come in the classroom and provided services to her students. Then the flipside is presented as the SLP is reflecting on her practices and realizes that perhaps this is not the best way to provide instruction to her students. In one situation she is a co-teacher and in the other situation she is more of a teacher’s aide.
I, Molly Saindon, am declaring my independence from Central Unit School District #4 entire schooling system. As many know, we as students slave away for fourteen years of our life within the schooling district of Central Unit School District #4. This must stop today. The people who love us are sending us away to camps that no man should have to endure. We encounter the harsh commentary from the other adolescent people, the never ending amount of work given every day, and the long lecturing hours that seem to never end.
Now, some might argue that, Cece can’t make friends because her partial defense interferes with the way she can build relationships. They also might argue that Cece couldn’t hear them when they were trying to talk to her. They think she’s weird just by the way she looks with her hearing aid. They also might argue that Cece can turn off her hearing aids and think that it’s mean and not want her to do that to them. They argue that Cece doesn’t tell them all her secrets like el Deafo or how she can use the microphone to hear where her teacher is in the building.

Today I attended the speech made by Karen Umemoto about why she should be elected as the chairman of Asian American Studies center. The title of her speech was “Synergy and Relevance: Building Community and Capacity at the Asian American Studies Center”. By listening to her speech I learned that she is a Community Planner and she wishes to have more engagement and interaction between different Asian ethnic groups. As a Community Planner, she showed that she has the ability to combined community engagement with teaching like the graph she showed during the speech. In the graph, she showed that how public engagement, research, and teaching could combine together in a triangular relationship.
In the scope of a speech-language pathologist’s practice, one may encounter a variety of people and populations, with a variety of abilities and disabilities, and with a variable amount of resources. For some clients and families, resources may be limited, therefore making it difficult to make ends meet when services are not covered by insurance. ASHA states that misrepresentation is, “Any statement by words or other conduct that, under the circumstances, amounts to an assertion that is false or erroneous (i.e., not in accordance with the facts); any statement made with conscious ignorance or a reckless disregard for the truth,” (Code of Ethics). As an SLP, there may be instances where misrepresentation may seem like a solution in order to benefit the client and/or the client’s family. Take this scenario for example.
I think it is interesting how all of these political parties each have their own unique view on economic issues. Looking at the chart, it is clear that the Democratic Party differs greatly from the Libertarian Party and Constitution Party. The Democrats believe deficit spending is necessary during economic downturns while the Libertarians and members of the Constitution Party disagree. These two parties want to eliminate unbalanced budgets. The Constitution Party had an interesting view on this topic because they believe deficit spending will greatly be reduced if the United States stays out of wars taking place in other countries.
The profession of Speech Language Pathology enables others to be heard and gives them the ability to have a voice. As a Communication Disorders major, I found my voice through education and personal experiences. During my undergraduate career, I have balanced extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and leadership roles while maintaining superior grades in my coursework. However, my qualities go far beyond my list of accomplishments. Passion, my value of education, and my objective to improve the lives of others have driven me to pursue a career in Speech Language Pathology.
