Aired in 2013, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo “The Answer is 11” commercial was like no other. The setting, from prior knowledge, is in a college classroom, because of the giant chalkboard and a really big classroom, where the stereotypical guy sleeps in class and guesses the answer, eleven, correctly. The commercial is being drawn more towards college men or men in their early twenties. The reasoning behind the statement is because the sleeping male student is being called on by the professor and at the end of the commercial the male is driving the vehicle. The reason behind that is because there are females present but none of them drove the vehicle or have a big role in this commercial. At the beginning there is the stereotypical guy sleeping in class and he gets called on. The scene is pathos because there is an empathetic feel to it. It has that feel because at least once in life, there will be a student who falls asleep in class. The professor/teacher tries to get them to pay attention and wake up. With the professor trying to wake up the student, it gives the sleeping student confusion of what is going on and he/she ends up guessing what the answer is. Only this time the student is right and the professor is taken back. The empathetic feel is apparent because the student could have something in their life going on to where he/she does not sleep. When the answer 11 is discovered, the professor video chats people from all over the world. One person really stuck out and that was Stephen Hawking. Stephen Hawking is a highly accredited person with having used to be a Mathematics professor at the University of Cambridge (Hawking). With Hawking being present, it gives off the ability to trust him because of his credentials. This overall is not too important throughout the commercial because it only shows that Hawking agrees with the answer eleven. There is so said evidence that Hawking agrees with the product or message being sold. On the contrary, with Hawking being in the commercial it gives off the ‘I trust this vehicle because Stephen Hawking was involved’ feeling.
