Joe Rantz’s character arc helps him develop over the course of The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. Towards the beginning of the book, Joe is very independent and goal oriented. After being abandoned by his dad for the second time 15 year old Joe knew that to be able to feed himself he would need to take every opportunity he could to stay ahead of The Great Depression. “In all all this Joe grew continually stronger and ever more self reliant. Through it all he stayed in school and earned good grades” (Brown 62).
The book Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen has many interesting characters, themes and has many ups and downs such as the death of Jacobs parents, rendering him lost and unsure what steps he needs to take in order to find himself again. As well as a battle with his love for a woman he can't have. Jacob is a very well respected character who holds high values and although he struggles due to always helping others, he always puts in a solid effort. The real downfall is with Jacob Jankowski and his love for all life. Although August is the main antagonist who causes many problems for Jacob, if Jacob didn't have these qualities for caring for animals and people, his life would have been much easier throughout the story.
In Linda Sue Park’s “A Long Walk to Water” , the main character, Salva encounters several challenges. Through his longing, leadership, and tenacity. Salva has lost his parents, sisters, and brothers because of the Sudanese civil war. Salva is a strong, determined, and knowledgeable person. For example, the narrator uses made up words, and slang to emphasize the western community.

Jacob, who just lost his parents in a cruel, sufferable way and to deal with this tragedy Jacob leaves town to only stumble upon a circus. He joins this circus as a close to almost vet; considering he didn’t exactly take the exam but did go to school. He meets many new people and falls in love with someone so unexpected.

Chris’ character is used to demonstrate the idea that individuals may escape from the miserable aspects of their lives in order to stay happy. Through the course of this work, you witness the changes Chris undergoes, through the eyes of his six-year-old cousin Vanessa, which ultimately lead to his downfall.
Throughout “All the Pretty Horses” by Cormac McCarthy, the main character John Grady Cole is submitted to many evils as he tries to find his own place in the world. In his own personal quest for a happy ending, John represents the idealized cowboy of the Old Wild West uncovering the truth of the violent and deadly landscape he encounters. John Grady attempts to mesh together his romanticised cowboy honor code into a land that concedes nothing to nobility and the only winner is the one who survives. Only through his many trials and beatings does John Grady begin to accept the world for what it is, a place that does not contain only pretty horses; however, he still manages to remain true to himself and what he believes in. From the beginning of “All the Pretty Horses,” John Grady Cole faces threats from the modern world towards the cowboy life he admires so much.
Character development is a crucial element to any story, especially due to the fact that is is utilized to create depth within a piece of writing. In Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen presents an extremely dynamic character by the name of Jacob Jankowski. In his old age, he undergoes a significant change in his attitude throughout his time at the nursing home. Through the remembrance of old memories from his life at the circus, Jacob Jankowski develops a sense of happiness and rediscovers his independence.
The quotes from Jack Thayer helped me feel the intensity and emotion of the story “Into the Dark Water” By Lauren Tarshis. In this story, Jack Thayer a 17 year boy stuck fighting for his life on the Titanic. As it sank he lost his parents and all he had was his friend. There was quotes from him that kept you reading. It felt like you were there and what it was like to go through tragedy.
Have you ever gone through the desert with only a small gourd of water? Well, the Lost boys of Sudan went through South Sudan to get away from the war, and some other challenges. In the book a Walk to Water Salva and Nya have problems of getting water, but Salva is based on a real person who went through the challenges of losing his family and the brutal Sudanese war. These are some of the challenges he faced and how he solved them with what he had throughout his life. Through harsh challenges Salvas new foster family was always there for him to support and encourage him through tough times.
Main characters of films and short stories are evolving tremendously, from their actions to their character traits. In the thriller short story “All the Kings Horses” by Kurt Vonnegut, the main character portrays himself as an excellent and intelligent individual. Reason being in the short story Kelly was placed in a really bad situation. However because of specific reasons; his actions, determination, and sacrifices he was able to get the result he wanted while being under so much pressure. Colonel Bryan Kelly, father of two and husband to one, had to play a life or death game of chess.
The main character in the historical novel “Water for Elephants,” written by Sara Gruen, is Jacob Jankowski. In the novel he is pictured both young and old. This character is in retelling a story from his youth while he is 93 years old and in a nursing home. Young Jacob and old Jacob both have their own problems and other troubles. The older Jacob tells his story of his youth because he feels bad for being old.
In enduring these complex emotions, this section was the most remarkable part. One of the first apparent emotions the boy experiences with the death of his father is loneliness to make this section memorable. The boy expresses this sentiment when he stays with his father described as, “When he came back he knelt beside his father and held his cold hand and said his name over and over again,” (McCarthy 281). The definition of loneliness is, “sadness because one has no friends or company.”
Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness. It drives us all. It makes us believe in something even when we think everything is against us. Author Nam Le explores the theme of hope in his short story, The Boat and director John Hill coat in his film, The Road. The author and director explore the theme through character development, scenery, the use of symbols and metaphors also through character behaviours.
