After watching “Waiting for Superman” I gained a great deal of knowledge on the public school systems in America. The film raised many questions in my mind especially the one’s listed to answer is this essay. The film also discussed the progression of public schools and the statistics that they hold. Charter schools, in my opinion, are a genius idea. There are many pros to charter schools, such as, free tuition and independent curriculum. Charter schools are great because they have an independent curriculum, which veers them away from problems that public schools tend to have. These issues with curriculum are as a result of the difference between the state curriculum and the national curriculum, which creates a state of confusion in public schools. Another pro of a charter school is that they offer “streamline tenure.” This means that the charter school will give certain tenure guidelines after five consecutive years of academic service. The streamline tenure allows the charter schools to create a system where they can give this protection, but still motivate the teacher to teach his or her class. They do this by having the right to revoke streamline tenure if the teacher is inefficient or is not satisfying the school’s requirements. A con of charter schools is that they can’t take everyone in a school district so some children are left to fail out and not graduate in the public schools. Another con of charter schools is that they focus a little too much on learning, in my opinion, and they don’t offer as many sports and extracurricular activities as other schools. Finally, the last con about charter schools is that they don’t work with the disabled children. In conclusion, charter schools are a great alternative to public schools and are less flawed than the public school
