In the attached Excel workbook, we take a look at The Walt Disney Company and Comcast. These two companies will be looked at in order to determine which would be a better company to invest in. In the below document, a more in depth financial performance can be found. With both companies producing almost the same product types (media, parks & resorts, merchandise), there are some slight differences between the two companies. The Walt Disney Company is a mass media entertainment company, while Comcast is a telecommunications & mass media company.
Three-Year Returns
The first look with these two companies is their three-year returns. These returns are based off a three year stock return from 2015 to 2017 as 2018 is an incomplete year (as of today, June 16th, 2018). Disney showed a three-year return of -3.25% in cell B17 of WB10. Disney has been around since 1923 and everyone seems to know what they do. From television programs and movies to theme parks and merchandise, Disney is known by almost everyone in the world. That is one of their strengths financially. Everyone seems to know the name and continues to flock towards Disney and that keeps their financial stability in check.
Comcast is one super company made up of other big companies that dabble in many fields of entertainment and technology. With being a media and entertainment company, the main weakness for Comcast is being in the same field as Disney. Like I said above, Disney is known throughout the world in some fashion and Comcast usually has to fight with that. That weakness can hurt sometimes, but having other doors with more fields of business is a strength for Comcast. Being involved in telecommunications is a big plus for Comcast and sometimes their saving grace.
