In the book Shades of Gray by Carolyn Reeder Uncle Jed did not fight in the war. This is because on page 12 Meg says “Anyways, people's rights are more important than states’ rights, and Pa had the right to decide not to fight in the war.” Will was a confederate supporter and in the beginning of the book he did not believe in Uncle Jed's decision. Toward the end Will started to Understand why Uncle Jed did not fight. In a letter that he was sent to james woodley Wills says something that he reads aloud to the Joneses and everybody was amazed. “I also understand now that people have to decide for themselves what is right and stand up for what they believe in.”I think this is the most important plot in the story even though others might disagree. Aunt Ella and Meg now believe in Will and trust him with Chores. Also Will did call his Uncle jed uncle because he thought he was a traitor and a coward. Now he calls Him Uncle Jed and everyone is in disbelief. That is how The Joneses family got closer by Will understanding Uncle Jed. IN shades of Gray will has to decide if he wants to live with the joneses or stay with someone back home. Will wouldn't of stayed if he hadn't of told his Uncle that he believes in his decisions and that he understands him. This cleared the tensions. Then he was able to decide that he would be happy with the joneses so he decided to live with them.(page 152) “Mama was right to send me here. This is where I belong.” That is how will telling UNcle Jed he understands him stay and live with them. Meg and Will always fight on what they think of Uncle Jed. These fight will now come to an end and they will be happy. On page 12 Meg and will fight over the reason why he didn't fight. “Don’t you know anything?
