The superstate of Oceania told its citizens constantly that they were at war with other superstates. In reality, the United States of America after 2001, they seemed to be at constant war against someone. The United States’ history of war is very similar to the war Oceania is facing because they both constantly change who they’re at war with. This leaves their citizens confused, and with hatred and bias against the people of those countries they’re at war with.

In “1984”, Oceania has told their citizens that they’re at war with Eurasia as their ally and Eastasia as their enemy. However, towards the end of the book, Winston tells his lover Julia that he remembers a time when Eurasia was the enemy, but the Party had rewritten it to make it Eastasia instead. Every citizen of Oceania is unaware of the change the Party makes on the war because they change every piece of information to make it look like they’ve been at war with Eastasia instead of what their information said before. The United States in 2001 was attacked by international terrorists, bombing and destroying the Twin Towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, d.c. After that horrible attack, the country raged war in the Middle East in order to find the terrorist group, Al Qaeda, who was responsible for the 9/11 Attacks. In the article, “Fifteen years after 9/11, America in perpetual war”, “Fifteen years after the Twin Towers fell, forever changing New York’s skyline, Obama said the terror threat facing America had “evolved,” referring to lone-wolf attacks in the United States like the nightclub massacre in Orlando in June.” Once that group decimated, people questioned why the United States Army was still in the Middle East.
