He was so actively involved in everything going on around him. He was one of the only African American musicians who spoke up against political issues, he publically talked about the wrongness of school segregation (Harris).
Charlie Parker was a famous American musician who played the saxophone, he was known as the “Yardbird” by other musicians. In the film “Celebrating the triumph of Charlie Parker”, I learned that Charlie was born in the year of 1920 in Kansas City, Kansas. Charlie began to play the saxophone when we was eleven. At the age of fourteen, he had the dream of becoming the most influential figure in the 20th century music. He was leading a revolution in modern jazz music when he was twenty years old.
He started to write poetry about love and short stories about himself while at home. As he started to get older and build a vocabulary from reading, he would start really taking these poems more seriously. He would show all of his works to teachers and friends just to see what their reactions would be. If they said they didn’t like a certain part, he would do his best to make corrections and make it sound better. It wasn’t until his sophomore year that he realized mixing his writing with his passion for music would be his true passion overall.
In 1936, Armstrong became the first African American to be featured in a Hollywood movie and to write an autobiography. Also, in 1937 he was the first African American to be on a sponsored radio broadcast. Moreover, he performed at hotels that didn't allow African Americans to stay, and he had contracts that no other African American had in the 1930s (Source A). Armstrong brought together scat singing, blues, and his trumpet and cornet to make a modern jazz. In his lifetime, Armstrong made thousands or records and inspired many to follow their dreams.
Pick up a history book, flip through its pages, and find a section(s) dedicated to African Americans. There will be a supercut of slavery and a few inventors, enough to count on one’s hand. Ultimately, only the historical characters that are considered salient are provided, which are white educators, Presidents, legislators, advocates, inventors, etc. This issue engenders the remaining reason to advocate Black History Month. “Carter G. Woodson was the sole individual responsible for creating Negro History Week in Washington, D.C., in February 1926” (Edmondson).
Celebrating Black history month is beneficial to all American citizens. African descendants played a major element of American history, they helped build America, and schools now are not fully explaining black history. This is something we have to change. Black history month explains what Africans American went through for centuries and their achievements.

Black history should not just be limited to one month of the year, but rather should be recognized and celebrated all year around as an integral part of American history and culture. Black History Month started in the US when American author and historian Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the study of African American life and History. In February 1926, he launched the celebration of a historic week dedicated to teaching the cultural significance of the history of black Americans. They created Black History Month to give special recognition and celebrate black contributions, But I think there is no way to show recognition in only a month of the whole year.
He was born into a middle-class family which allowed him to be able to have the ability to have access to music at an early age. His mother was a key figure in his life when it came to music. She encouraged him to seek out a musical instrument when he was young. He started playing the piano very early in life, around the age of six, and it soon became clear to his family that he had a natural talent for it. He went on to study the piano and take piano lessons, per his family’s suggestion, soon after his talent was discovered.
He started playing guitar at the age of 13 and would sneak out of the house to show up at local clubs and play with the more accomplished musicians. He learned his way around the world of music with his boots on the ground. He went on to be a highly respected record producer and an executive with Columbia Records and MCA Records. While know for referring to people as “Dawg” in 2004 he wrote a book entitled What's Up Dawg?
