Who is the Son of Sam? What did he do? Is he actually the son of Sam? Well it’s much more confusing than you may think. Sadly, the Son of Sam, or his real name, which is David Berkowitz; isn’t the type of person you would wish him to be. Berkowitz is a serial killer who has a very interesting story unlike some others you may have heard. You may be wondering why he committed the crimes he did, and it all comes down to his childhood he had while growing up.

David Berkowitz didn’t have your typical standard of a good childhood. It was extremely complicated and most likely took a huge toll on his psychology. David Berkowitz was put up for adoption shortly after he was born. Berkowitz was adopted, but according to the (Crime Museaum), “Berkowitz began to show early signs of his future violent behavior patterns.” When Berkowitz was only fourteen, his adoptive mother had died from breast cancer. The first letter that the police received was on April 17, 1977, at the scene of one of his crimes. In the letter Berkowitz basically explained that his killing spree will continue. Berkowitz signed the letter with Son of Sam, giving himself the nickname that he soon became infamous for. When the police eventually caught David Berkowitz, they asked him why he signed the letters with “Son of Sam”, his response to this wasn’t what they were expecting.
