He was an American outlaw, guerrilla, gang leader, bank robber, train robber, and murderer from the state of Missouri and the most famous member of the James-Younger Gang. Jesse and his brother Frank James were Confederate guerrillas or bushwhackers during the Civil War. After the war, as members of various gangs of outlaws, they robbed banks, stagecoaches, and trains. Jesse Woodson James was born in Clay County, Missouri, near the site of present-day Kearney, on September 5, 1847. This area of Missouri was settled by many Southerners and became known as Little Dixie.
During this time, Clyde and his brother Buck got arrested and spent a few days in jail. Later, Bonnie began working in a restaurant in town. Buck and Clyde were then arrested for robbery and were released on bail, and then Bonnie and Clyde met. Clyde got arrested again, and Bonnie snuck in a gun, letting Clyde use it to escape. Clyde got arrested and locked into Eastham, where he committed his first murder.

Stephen Paddock, the Las Vegas shooter, killed fifty eight people who had gathered along the Las Vegas strip for a music concert before shooting and ending his life. A statement from his brother to reporters stated that their father at some point was featured in the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. Patrick Hoskins Paddock, their father got arrested in 1960 after robbing banks and was served with a 20 year jail term. Eight years while serving his term in jail, he managed to escape and was on the run until 1978. Reports provided by the FBI stated that he was to be considered harmful to the society (Kutner, Max).
The humiliation of the Confederates’ lost in the war made James feel like a victim and he did not want to have to live with the guilt of being a failure of what the South stood up for. He decided to keep fighting against the North and started targeting banks. One in particular targeted in Gallatin, Missouri he knew was owned by the man that murdered one of his fellow gang members during his time with the Confederate Guerrillas, “Bloody Bill” Anderson. Still teamed up with his brother Frank James, on December 7, 1869, Jesse and his brother shot a cashier and stole some papers worth nothing. They made a promise that they would never be captured alive.
On the night of October 16, 1859, he and his followers, five of whom were African-American, attacked the lightly guarded supply depot, in Harper’s Ferry Virginia, where the supplies and weapons he wanted were being stored. The arsenal was easily taken. Then, Brown’s men moved to some nearby plantations. They freed about 30 slaves, who were brought back to the arsenal. The alarm went out and the United States troops arrived at the scene the next day.

The same goes for a popular stagecoach driver of the mid 1800s, a man named Charley Parkhurst, who is best known for being a woman disguised as a man.

He is treated with awe for his physical accomplishments as a record-breaking Olympic champion, but he is also recognized for overcoming the humiliating and abusive treatment he encountered while working towards this goal. This passion for hatred was constantly fueled while James was fighting in the Civil War.

Lerner killed a man in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was convicted of murder. However, Lerner’s attorney assisted on dropping the charges to voluntary manslaughter. In the books final chapter, is where he flashes back to the crime that sent him to prison.
