Schindler: A Man of Courage, Strength, and Sacrifice
What is a hero? In my opinion, a hero can be a number of things. A person you look up to, a person who performs an act of selflessness, or even an ordinary person who does something out of the ordinary. Oskar Schindler was a man of flaws like the rest of us, but also a man of courage, strength, and sacrifice. As a result of working closely with the Nazis, he was able to witness first hand accounts of what happened inside of the execution/forced labor camps that Jews were imprisoned in. Schindler witnessed death, torture, labor, pain, and barbaric conditions. This was unbelievably wrong in the eyes of Schindler. Over the course of the war, Schindler spent every last penny bribing them into sending Jews to his factory. Schindler was involved in gambling and the black market, se he typically had money to fall back on. His entire career, however, was based on entire risk and luck. This didn’t discourage him, nevertheless. At the end of the war, Schindler survived on gifts and donations of the Jews he saved. “He settled down in 1949 as a farmer, supported financially by the Jewish organization Joint and thankful Jews, who never forgot him,” says an excerpt from The Oskar Schindler Story. “And his life was totally dependent on gifts and money from the Jews he saved,” it says. This proves that he was so dedicated in saving the Jews that ended up bankrupt and reliant on the people he had saved. Schindler died in Germany, penniless and almost unknown, in October 1974.
