On May 8, 1945, the world celebrated V-E Day, the surrender of Germany, and the end of the war in Europe. But those in Japan had nothing to celebrate. The war was still occurring, and it seemed like Japan had no intention of stopping. In fact, Japan had vowed to fight until their last man, regardless of how the odds may seem. This led President Truman to justifiably, drop the atomic bombs on Japan. Truman was justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Japan because it was the only way to stop the war for good. It helped prevent the Soviet Union, a nation with completely opposing values and beliefs, from entering the war against the Japanese, it helped prevent any more American lives being taken, and ultimately helped end the war sooner. America’s people suffered many deaths throughout the duration the war. From the minute Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor, to the long months of fighting in the Pacific. The U.S were forced to mourn thousands of American lives that were lost because Japan insisted in fighting, even though their whole nation was in shambles. The bomb was the only way to help prevent the death of any more American lives, and help bring back the tranquility that world once had. Stimpson says, “Only the complete destruction of her military power could open the way to lasting peace.” he then goes on to say, “I was informed that such operations might be expected to cost over a million casualties, to American forces alone.”(Stimson, 1947). This is basically saying the only way for the world to return to peace was to drop the bomb. The “operations” Stimson is talking about is continuing to fight the war without dropping the bomb. Stimpson essentially states two possible outcomes: using the bomb, which will bring peace to the world, or not drop the bomb, and expect to deal with at least a million American casualties.
