Introduction Faculty members play a significant role in higher education. The roles and responsibilities of faculty members in colleges and universities are strictly tied to the core functions of higher education system. Faculty bring creative, culturally sensitive ideas to the institution (Diamond, 2002, 271). College and university faculty members commit to research and teaching in order to fulfill the academic work of their institutions. Regardless of this common role and responsibility, faculty members are not being rewarded at the same level. Their position, part time or full time, tenured or not tenured, translates to the benefits they receive. As stated by the institution, an appointment to the academic staff in general “is made in response to a need recognized in the programs of teaching and research in the university and for which budget provision has been made”. Washington University, like its peers, highlights the importance of teaching and research principles in its faculty appointment conditions. University’s faculty population formed by different ranks faculties from adjunct to full professors. Except for short note in the beginning of the faculty appointment measures, the institution does not stress the financial and budget condition for appointment decision. As expected from a high-ranking research institution, Washington University underscores the teaching and research as its primary focus; which reflects part of its mission statement that guides “to foster excellence in our teaching, research, scholarship and service”.
