2.0 CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE RIVIEW.
2.1 Introduction.
Every community produces both liquid and solid wastes and air emissions. The liquid waste water is basically the water supply of the community after it has been used for various reasons. On the other hand, wastewater may be defined as the combination of the liquid or water-carried wastes removed from residences, institutions, and storm water as may be present.
When the untreated wastewater is accumulated and allowed to go to the septic, the decomposition of the organic matter it contains leads to the nuisance conditions including the production of hazardous gases. Additionally, untreated waste water has pathogenic microorganisms that dwell in the human intestinal tract. It also contains …show more content…

Each of this tanks are fitted with internal heating coils for heating the sludge with hot water generated by external boilers so that the optimum digestion temperature of 25-300 C can be achieved. Each digester also fitted with gas feed pipes through which external blowers can recirculate gas from the gas holders for the purpose of churning and mixing the sludge to improve the digestion. The digesters are not functioning properly. The anaerobic digester is a closed tank in which anaerobic organisms digest the organic matter into sludge. The organisms produce methane, hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide in the process.
The solids are then removed from the tank and sent to the sludge drying beds where they are sundried for eventual land application while supernatant is drawn off and sent to the inlet works and recycled.
On the other hand, KSTW has other equipments like,
 Gas holders – there are two gas holders one built in 1961 and the other one in 1988. There is no gas produced from the digesters hence they contain no gas.
 Heating water generator boilers – there are two hot water boilers installed for heating the sludge in the digesters but due to lack of gas they do not work.
 Stand by electricity power generator – there are two gas operated generators installed to provide electric power during power supply failures. They do not function due to lack of
