Our beautiful 31st state, California, is in a major drought. What is causing the valley to sink more than it ever has in recent years? “Sipping California Dry” authored by Matt Richtel, goes beyond the issues at hand by interviewing the farmers themselves, detailing exactly what is happening in the golden state with pictures that show just how bad it is in California. This drought is a real issue, and the author works very hard to bring to light certain aspects of it that we may not know about in a detailed, informative way.
In the article of the week The Wrong Way to “Think about California Water” by Michael Hiltzik, Hiltzik explains why we are thinking about California's water the wrong way. He gives several reasons why we are thinking about California's drought the wrong way that seem to significant , but my family can cut back on water usage using these same principles. First, even when he said that water bottles are not the significant causes of water usage they still are a portion of that water usage. A way we could save water is to finish all that water, drink only when we're thirsty, and give any leftover water to the plants, making it a double win. Another way we could save water is to use more drought resistant plants, or fake plants.
In the article “California Drought: Governor Jerry Brown Issues Water Rules” for the Cable News Network, Ray Sanchez explains how Governor Jerry Brown is taking drastic measures to reduce California’s water usage. To do that, he has established many rules and restrictions on the people of California, as well as its businesses and farms. Governor Brown states that this drought needs extraordinary actions, as it has shown in the Sierra Nevada Mountains which has lost snow and are now covered with dry and brown grass. I agree with Sanchez and Governor Brown about imposing these rules and restriction on the people of California because these restrictions are going to help guide California out of the drought or at least help maintain and not let this drought get any worse than it already is. I agree with the author because in the article he provides good support to show why these rules need to be enacted upon
Reisner dedicates an entire chapter to the dirty water politics that embodies the state of California. In this excerpt from chapter ten, the audience is almost able to feel the utter disgust that Reisner holds towards the gluttonous Californian water politics: "The whole state thrives, even survives, by moving water from where it is, and presumably isn't needed, to where it isn't, and presumably is needed. No other state has done as much to fructify its deserts, make over its flora and fauna, and rearrange the hydrology God gave it. No other place has put as many people where they probably have no business being. There is no place like it anywhere on earth.
People need to start putting their foot down and help make other people who are not aware of the situation more aware. Without water we will lose essential needs that we need to survive such as food and energy. Due to the climate changes and warmer weather, people need to become more aware of how serious the water scarcity is. As listed above there are many ways that people are trying to prevent the drought from continuing but the people who are using the methods to prevent are the people being affected by it now. All states need to take part in this prevention before the drought gets more out of control and it potentially taking all of the water resources.
California is in a state of scarcity of momentous magnitudes with no end in the near future as long as Jerry Brown is governor. Mr. Brown, a lifelong Democrat, is America’s oldest governor and has served in this position several times. During his first charge of California in 1975-1983 he was all about his own agenda along with his poor leadership skills, disregarded the legislators. In 2011, three years into his second governorship, Mr. Brown’s first budget faced a deficit of $25.4 billion. Thanks to the rich people in California, whose income gets a boost from the American bull market to pay a huge share of taxes, this year they are looking at a potential surplus of $4.2 billion.
Article of the Week Response “The Wrong Way to Think about California Water” is an argumentative piece of writing that was written by Michael Hiltzik in the Los Angeles Times. This article stresses mostly about the mere fact of how people waste water; especially in California. The major drought is causing people to use more water than we actually need to use normally. We don’t need to use as much water as we do
People in this society believes every statement that is said by an important person true. In California, new reports has claimed California to be in a drought due to the waste of water. However, is California’s drought report an actual problem? Ever since 2013, the news station ABC news have claimed California is in a drought crisis.
The 1930s in America were not prosperous years for the nation. The time saw a drought that could be compared to biblical proportions. News people were saying conditions were awful. According to source #1, the drought, the drought covered close to 100 million acres. It toke A out of the plans.
The California Water Wars involved Owen 's Valley and Los Angeles struggling with each other. Mulholland built a aqueduct, but where did the water come from? The water was provided from the Owen 's Lake. The farmers and ranchers of Owen 's Valley didn 't give up their water rights easily. Fred Eaton and William Mulholland both used lies and a series of trickery and strategies to convince the farmers to give their water to Los Angeles.
California dry from all of its water people trying to sell or just moving anywhere else. The drought has been going on for many years and slowly California is running out of water. If the government of California does not do anything the people may start to attack farmer to get water or the government may go for the people. The farmers are using all the water and people are losing their water.
Following the Flow - Is Animal Agriculture Making Californian’s Thirsty? California’s four-year drought has raised the discussion of statewide water preservation. To-date, Governor Brown’s executive orders have focused on reducing water consumption by twenty-five percent to local homes, businesses, and schools. However, Brown’s orders fail to address California’s largest water consumer: Animal agriculture, which consumes nearly half of the state’s water and which contributes to the global increase in temperatures, exacerbating the drought. Though Earth cycles through periods of increasing and decreasing temperatures, humans have further induced the warming of our planet with overpopulation, deforestation, habitat destruction, species extinction,
My current event article is from the New York Times and is titled, A Culture of Nagging Helps California Save Water. This article coincides closest with chapter one in our book, entitled, Environmental Problems, Their Causes, and Sustainability. I picked this article because I like the idea of a great number of people coming together to help our environment in a pretty small amount of time to keep the place they call home from danger. I also liked how it displayed our ability to want to be more environmentally friendly or helpful when faced with the fear of being scolded or ridiculed by our peers. California is a state in our country that over time has been plagued with periods of little precipitation throughout its history.
The 2012 State Water Plan was adopted by the Board on December 15, 2011, and sent to the Governor on January 5, 2012. It offers an honest assessment of the current landscape and offers a variety of solutions for dealing with the problem, focusing mainly on conservation and efficiency, but also on building new reservoirs, tapping additional sources of water underground and treating waste water. Its main message is that in serious drought conditions, Texas does not and will not have enough water to meet the needs of its people, its businesses, and its agricultural enterprises. Some of the water in the new plan is expected to come from conservation by municipal customers and farmers. Most of the water will come from what the plan calls “other surface water,” which would involve better connecting existing surface water supplies and building off-channel reservoirs.
Due to a shortage of water in California, the governor has proposed a diversion system to move water from the Northern California to Southern California. As for this will probably help since there is more farming, and more climate changes in Northern California. This will make a big bad and good difference. First, it will be a bad situation because then the farmers will not have the water they need for their crops, animals, etc.
