The term ‘Lost Boys of Sudan’ refers to the about 20,000 boys that were displaced in the Second Sudanese Civil War. A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park is a novel based on the true experiences of some of Sudan’s lost boys. A character in the novel based on these boys, Salva, must leave his village and flee the Second Sudanese Civil War. He tries to find safety from the violence by walking to a camp in Ethiopia, facing many perils along the way. When the Ethiopian government forces the refugees to leave the country, Salva must begin yet another, long difficult journey to Kenya.
The book Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen has many interesting characters, themes and has many ups and downs such as the death of Jacobs parents, rendering him lost and unsure what steps he needs to take in order to find himself again. As well as a battle with his love for a woman he can't have. Jacob is a very well respected character who holds high values and although he struggles due to always helping others, he always puts in a solid effort. The real downfall is with Jacob Jankowski and his love for all life. Although August is the main antagonist who causes many problems for Jacob, if Jacob didn't have these qualities for caring for animals and people, his life would have been much easier throughout the story.
In Linda Sue Park’s “A Long Walk to Water” , the main character, Salva encounters several challenges. Through his longing, leadership, and tenacity. Salva has lost his parents, sisters, and brothers because of the Sudanese civil war. Salva is a strong, determined, and knowledgeable person. Characters like the hero, villain, anti-hero, and victim play an integral role in the expression of the author’s ideas within the novel. The hero, however, is deemed to be the character who is the protector and enforcer of what is good and just. Despite this, a hero is not immaculate, as his/her decisions can reveal certain flaws.
Character development is a crucial element to any story, especially due to the fact that is is utilized to create depth within a piece of writing. In Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen presents an extremely dynamic character by the name of Jacob Jankowski. In his old age, he undergoes a significant change in his attitude throughout his time at the nursing home. Through the remembrance of old memories from his life at the circus, Jacob Jankowski develops a sense of happiness and rediscovers his independence.
In the engrossing novel Water for Elephants, by Sara Gruen, Jacob is more of a hero rather than a flawed character. Although there are many times where he does pick to do the most heroic actions, it is often forced upon him to not do so. Throughout the story, Jacob definitely shows many aspects of being a hero. What really makes Jacob a hero is his strong sense of what is right and what is wrong. Although he is initially confused about whether or not August is a good person, Jacob quickly realizes that August is horrible person, who beats his wife and abuses animals.

In the book a Walk to Water Salva and Nya have problems of getting water, but Salva is based on a real person who went through the challenges of losing his family and the brutal Sudanese war. These are some of the challenges he faced and how he solved them with what he had throughout his life. Through harsh challenges Salvas new foster family was always there for him to support and encourage him through tough times.

In the book “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, it’s about a little girl who is pressured by her mother to become something she doesn’t want to be. Jing- mei , the daughter, is forced to become a prodigy(child actress), by her mother, and she doesn’t want to be one. In the story, Jing- meis’ mother uses allusions such as Shirley Temple to push her into becoming a prodigy. Although at first Jing- mei is excited to become a prodigy, she later realizes its something she just doesn’t enjoy doing. Consequently, the uses of allusion in the story help Jing- mei discover to not be a prodigy and that what her mother wants for her is not always important.
