James Watson and Francis Crick, Crick and Watson, with the help Maurice Wilkins, won the 1962 Nobel Prize in Medicine for their discovery of the structure of DNA. This was one of the most significant scientific discoveries of the 20th century. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/crick_and_watson.shtml)

Francis Crick was born on the 8th of June 1916 near Northampton. He started his study on physics at University College, London. Then Crick started his work at the Cambridge University but changed his profession from physics to biology. He then started work at the Medical Research Council Unit at the Cavendish Laboratory in 1949. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/historic_figures/crick_and_watson.shtml)

Crick then began working with James Watson, who was an American student at the time who arrived at the laboratory in 1951. These two men started working together on studying the structure of DNA, which is the molecule that contains information on helping to find the common genes in the cells. At the time Maurice Wilkin and Rosalind Franklin were both working at the Kings College in London. The pair were using X-ray diffraction to study DNA. They published the news of their discovery of a molecular structure of DNA based on all the known features of the double Helix. Their own model served to explain how DNA replicates and how the hereditary information is coded on the Helix. This had set the stage for rapid advances in molecular biology that continues to this very day. Crick, Watson and Wilkin shared the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1962. Rosalind Franklin died in 1958 and despite her key work the prize could not be received post numerously. Crick and Watson received multiple other prizes and awards for their work.
