As a teacher, we have a responsibility to the learners who are left in our care for the majority of a working day. We are basically their parents for approximately eight hours a day. We therefore should try our best to keep them safe, not only physically but emotionally as well, I believe. There are many ways in which a teacher can create this safe environment for learners on a daily basis, which I will be highlighting in this essay based on some research that I have done.
Firstly I feel that one of the most important ways of making learners feel safe and secure would be to effectively manage discipline in the classroom. Establish ground rules within the classroom which are non-negotiable, e.g. disruptive learners and learners who bully others should be brought to book, and if punishment needs to be given, the teacher needs to follow through with it. They must know that the teacher is serious about discipline, which results in all the other learners feeling comfortable and safe in the classroom. That being said, one can reward learners for being thoughtful and respectful towards the teacher and their fellow learners. Another non-negotiable is definitely respect for the teacher and the other learners. No learner wants to be in a class with a moody and grumpy teacher. Learners must at all times feel comfortable with the teacher and feel that they are approachable. Also, teachers should remain calm in all situations. I think the worst thing that can possibly happen in the classroom is for a teacher to lose control with regards to any situation. This makes the learners uneasy and possibly even be afraid of the teacher.
