Eventually, jealous over Marita’s feeling toward her husband, Catherine declared love for both David and Marita. Further in the novel, there is a discussion over the reason for Catherine’s fragile mental state. It appears that both of her parents committed suicide in a car. It is suggested, that Catherine may follow the footsteps of her mother and father. Yet, by the end of the story, she realized that she needed help, and left David and Marita so that they would have a happy ending. Catherine Bourne is a complex character.
