Moore and his troops are on the breaking point after being dropped off by the Hueys and being attacked by the NVA. However unwilling to become the next George Custer he takes charge and calls in Fire Support. But he was unable to identify the enemy positions so by walking back each artillery strike he was able to hit the enemy and save his own men lives.

Moore uses his past experience from the Korean War and quick thinking to once again save more of his men lives. Needing cover and requesting smoke for cover for a withdrawl just to hearing that no smoke is available he request an White Phosphorus attack which instantly halted the NVA attack and creates cover for his men to retreat.

Hal goes up to his men and begins to salute not because he is a higher rank but because he wants to show his respect. And he even says that if his men had won no one else’s gratitude they had his.

So here with his men on the brink of collapse he has an realization that it does not matter what your rank was or who you were everyone was fighting for their survival so not sensing panic is able to rally forces and withstand the
