In John Steinbeck book The Pearl taught me a lesson of not to be greedy, disrespectful, and to see what money does to someone and how it controls people. Wealth and power affect people dramatically because people without it can't get things they need while people with lots of it over use the power of money. The theme of The Pearl was to watch how you use your money, to see how the money changes someone, to watch who you trust, and to see how people can change so fast with money. Kino and his family changed with the money/pearl but it was for the better or good, when Coyotito got sick they finally had something they could treat him with and they could have money for stuff to get them food and more mandatory things. Kino was trying to sell the pearl for a harpoon gun for fishing, new clothes for his family, for him and Juana to be married in the church, a rifle for hunting and for Coyotito to be baptized. Everyone in town that Kino had gone to were all lowballers because the pearl was “too big” o then Kino and his family had decided to go to the city and see how much he would be able to get for the pearl. People had attacked Kino for the pearl and put his family in danger because of the pearl. After Juanna tried to throw the pearl back out into the ocean Kino had started beating her and he took the pearl and went to the city to sell it. Greed was the main message in this story because the greed for money got stronger when the pearl was discovered. Kino had gone from a poor, kind, townsmen to a greedy, rude, disrespectful, “rich” man. Juanna was affected the most by Kino's greed because he had basically abandoned his family for money and he had beaten her all over her trying to save her family. Greed in this story is a lot like greed today, greed today can be over wealth, power, or even
