Should adolescents or children start weight training at a young age? Many adults have the concern that it will stunt their growth or the unsafe equipment will cause problems. This subject of children and adolescents of resistance training is widely talked about and whether the benefits are worth the risk or not. Some of the benefits the article talks about, is getting the needed physical activity, noticeable gains in weight, height, maximum oxygen uptake, anaerobic capacity, and muscle strength. Overall the obesity rate for children is about 17%. Ranging from ages 2-19 years old. Cynthia and fellow coworkers stated that, “The prevalence of obesity has remained fairly stable at about 17% and effects about 12.7 million children and adolescents” (Cynthia, etc. 2011, pg.1). A main reason that young children under the age of 5 should not start in Rt. There is not a study that has shown that kids cannot start that young but I believe that they are not mentally mature enough to start. When their body is ready to start RT or weight lifting the child will know and their parent will know. If the parent wants this process to speed up they are out of luck. There is little influence of the environment and it is mostly nature influencing the adolcent. Most movements that are practiced daily such as a dead lift or RDL when RT is a cephocadal movement.
