Structure with Children is an important thing for a child to have in their life. Without it they will not really know right from wrong. They will not have the right guidance that they need in their life to make good decisions. “Consistency, predictability, and follow-through are important for creating structure in the home.” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.) In “Welding with Children”, “Paul’s Case”, and “American Dropout” they all give examples of bad parenting structure, good structure and how it will effect their future. In “American Dropout”, kids dropped out of school because of many reasons but one is because they did not have good parenting. He realizes that how he is around his grandkids affects how they will act and what he teaches them. So he decides to make it right and have good structure with parenting with his grandkids. Once this happens and they have a good parent figure in their life, it could completely change their perspective on life and how they handle it. The other part of your job as a parent is to provide “structure” for your children. “In this role, you give direction, impose rules, use discipline, set limits, establish and follow through with consequences, hold your children accountable for their behavior, and teach values. You provide the guidance that helps your children to change, grow, and mature. Responsible behavior, in line with your children’s maturity levels, is taught and expected. If they have the bad, they will probably end up treating their kids the same way and it will be a never ending cycle of the bad. They will never know the right way to teach their kids from learning wrong and not knowing how to treat others. “He just stared at me, and I saw that he had no idea of what late was. Glendine, his momma, probably lets him fall asleep in front of the set every night.” (Gautreaux). That is an example of bad parenting, your child needs to have a bed time and a schedule, especially at that young of an age. “Children who have irregular bed times are more likely to have behavioral issues than children who have a regular bedtime routine. A survey of 10,00 children showed that irregular bedtimes are linked with difficulties such as hyperactivity, acting out and being emotionally withdrawn. Researchers think inconsistent bedtimes probably affect young children like jet lag.” (npr.org) If they have the good, you can only hope that it is a never ending cycle of the good. You want to teach your kids about morals and religion, and values and how to grow into a remarkable person.
