The main purpose for the majority of colleges is to prepare men and women for profitable, well paid careers. It is a basic foundation for men and women that can lead to the pinnacle of success.
In Fr. Arrupe’s quote, I believe he is saying that the primary focus of colleges and universities, should be to prepare and educate men and women, not only for financial, and lucrative careers, but to instill in them compassion and Christ like characteristics, to not only be witnesses to the difficulties and plights within society but to serve the less fortunate. What good is all the education and affluence in the world if men and women do not use their strengths, knowledge, and resources to better society and the community they live in?

Because of her strong compassion and nurturing spirit, seeing this really lay heavy on her heart, she knew and felt in her soul that something had to be done. Christmas is a time of jubilation and celebrating the birth of Jesus with family and friends. It is a time for love, caring, sharing and happiness. But this was not what she saw on the faces of some of the people in the community. She knew that she had to do something to help those in need, especially during Christmas. The plight of those she witnessed within the community continued to trouble her heart and her conscience. She believed the Holy Spirit was saying to her, “That’s who you should be serving.” Being a woman of great faith and conviction, she knew something had to be done and it had to start with her. She walked out on faith, took action, and with the support of the parish, in 1980 she served her first Christmas dinner to the less fortunate in the community, sacrificing time with her own
