Also been taught the basics of report writing, even without resorting to perjury, officers have tremendous leeway and discretion in their
Police organizations have been evolving over the years, but still there are so many things that have to be address in order to create a better law enforcement institutions. Police misconduct and police brutality have been the center of many confrontations between police officer and society. It is imperative that police organizations change the police subculture that exist among them that protects any wrongdoing from being disclose in order to promote a more efficient service to society. In the process of doing this assignment I learned how cohesive is the relationship between officers that most of the times protect them when they are acting in a misbehave way. It is really impressive to see how one officer was seen as a traitor in the organization because he decided to report police brutality.
The book Cop in the Hood made me more aware of what cops have to deal with now-a-days. There are several different policies that ensure people’s freedoms, however, that makes a cop’s job much more difficult. After reading this book I was also made aware how important people in society are to a cop. It makes their job easier, which in-turn allows society to be a safer place for all people. A cop is not able to stop all crimes without the help of society.
The transparency and exposed heart of what lies at the police headquarters needs to be visible to the public’s view. If the all-seeing and judging eye of the people of our city can see and understand reasoning as to why certain
Numerous videos and pictures floods the social media world like Facebook and Twitter everyday showing police officers abusing their power. This is not something new anymore and this is an ongoing problem that our Criminal Justice system in the United States has to focus on. The major scandal that happened in Los Angeles Men’s Central jail that involves 18 Los Angeles County Sheriff officers changed how the public looks at the police officers when they are inside of jail using their power and no one is looking. Integrity is one of the qualities that can be found in the police officers. If one officer have this quality it will prevent them doing abuse, misconduct or corruption.
Officers must know the proper way to make an arrest, execute an appropriate arrest warrant and conduct a "stop and frisk" search. The officer must be able to retain enough information about the incident to provide the prosecutor with sufficient details to craft a formal complaint. State police department have forensic professionals who work under the department how the responsibility to handle the collection and preservation of crime evidence have. The responding officer should clear the crime scene and secure it so that the evidence cannot be contaminated by outside
At approximately 10:30 a.m., I Detective L. Donegain contacted Shyheim White in the parking lot of the Speedway Gas Station. He arrived in a small black vehicle and was accompanied by two unknown black females. I read the Search Warrant to Shyheim and provided him with a copy. I then collected two buccal swabs. After collection the buccal swabs they were placed into the Evidence Control System.
Although we hope our Police force will use their powers for good, but sometimes police misconduct can occur. Often, the police are under great pressure to act as quick as possible, espcially in a murder case and if the murder victime is white, a child, police officer, or prominent. For example, In the 1990’s the case of Rodney King, that not only shows a racist issue within the criminal justice system, but also the issue with abuse from police officers, but changed the country’s views on the LA police force. Twenty- Seven years ago,Rodney King was brutally beaten by Los Angeles police officers.
After searching through the websites provided I decided that for this assignment I am going to use the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting website. The FBI Uniform Crime Reporting website provides a lot of information and insight on many different topics. The purpose stated on the homepage of this site is it can be used as a “starting place for law enforcement executives, students of criminal justice, researchers, members of the media, and the public at large seeking information on crime in the nation” (Uniform Crime Reporting). This website gives a lot of statistics on a wide variety of topics. Topics included in the website are; crime in the United States, law enforcement officers killed and assaulted, hate crimes, cargo theft, and human trafficking.
In the past, lots of people have been mistreated for reasoning they can not control. One of these types of people is disabled people, primarily mentally disabled people. In past years people with mental disabilities were sometimes even seen as demons. This is common because of some beliefs, however closer to present day people with disabilities are left out. This is why Eunice Shriver 's started the Special Olympics.
Police accountability is responsible to deliver crime control and maintain order, while treating individuals fairly and within the bounds of law. Police officers are expected to uphold laws, regarding due process, search and seizure, arrests, discrimination, as well as other laws relating to equal employment, and sexual harassment. Holding police accountable is important to build trust with the public's and for them to have faith in the system. There have been many complaints from the public against law enforcement, rather than relying on police departments. Integrity and accountability issues in policing is one of the reasons why the community feel unsafe and bias towards police officers because of the physical abuse of some police officers who are careless and abused of their power.
It is easy to learn about a subject from a book, but it is an entirely different matter to learn about a subject through real life experience. I hope to learn how to serve and protect while implementing the law correctly, especially in today’s world when the level of support for police officers is very low and the level of misconduct cases concerning the police are very high. It is not easy to know what to do in every situation, especially when some reactions are needed with very little or no time to think about. It is one thing to hear about a crime happening and the response that would be best to give, and another thing to need
While it can be interpreted as standing for ones beliefs, a police officer must uphold a high moral code in accordance to the society which is being served. The ethics to which police officers holds themselves, must include the character traits demonstrated in personal life, in addition to operating as public servants. If an officer is deemed untrustworthy at home, they cannot be trusted to work legally within the police department. Honesty within policing is just as important, where failing to admit a mistake can weaken a reputation and call previous cases into question. Although these traits can be trained into an individual, integrity must be developed personally before it can be applied
In the interview with Officer Richard Bucklin, I asked him questions regarding his experiences as a police officer, the highs and lows of being a police officer, his opinions about recent controversial police topics and the challenges he faces everyday. All of his answers were very interesting and informational. I learned a lot when interviewing Officer Bucklin. I started off by asking Officer Bucklin how he got started in his field of work? Officer Bucklin responded saying that he needed a steady job that had a weekly pay.
Law Enforcement has a main reason in life, in why it exists and what exactly it does. It a main job in life, it helps keep people safe in the world today. Law enforcement helps keep criminals away and provides criminal justice. It has made many systems that have helped figure out those who committed crimes (“Law Enforcement” FBI). Many people ask themselves why the law enforcement exists.
