Many different types of police agencies exist in the United States of America. Every police agency varies from small town police departments to larger federal agencies. The functions of the police agencies usually depend on the type of organization, its size, its mission, and jurisdiction. When selecting an agency that is suitable for you and your interests several things should be considered.

This includes patrolling on roadways, enforcing state laws, maintaining peace and assisting municipal police when necessary. In most of the states, county or municipal police, have jurisdiction over crimes in their area until assistance from the state police force is or required. State police often hold primary jurisdiction over laws pertaining to the manufacture or sale of controlled substances. To arrest and detain a suspect, state police officers must have probable cause to believe that a crime has either already happened, is in progress or is about to take place. The officer should always advise the suspect of his legal rights, which is as a Miranda warning and must respect the suspect's right to suspend interrogation until a lawyer is present. Officers must know the proper way to make an arrest, execute an appropriate arrest warrant and conduct a "stop and frisk" search. The officer must be able to retain enough information about the incident to provide the prosecutor with sufficient details to craft a formal complaint. State police department have forensic professionals who work under the department how the responsibility to handle the collection and preservation of crime evidence have. Along with these units, there are agencies that focus directly on bomb threats, gang-related crimes, drugs, organized crime, sex crimes and numerous other heinous acts.
It is difficult to come up with a designated approach of organizational, management, administration, and operational capabilities at these three organizational stages that is considering that all the departments have their own way of ruling and their own approaches accordingly making them specific from each
