In the 1500’s and 1600’s, Europe dived into an era of exploration of new trade routes. Exploration carried out by explorers like Cortes, Diaz and Da Gama led Europe into new lands. The main motivations of these explorers were to gather spices and gold. Their countries were infatuated with the spices of Asia and with precious metals. Religion was not the main motivation for European exploration during the 15th and 16th centuries; however, the search for wealth was.
The Middle Ages were a time where kings and nobles owned the land and serfs worked with little pay. Serfs were like slaves that worked on a farm (Doc. 1). They got one day to farm for themselves and the other six they were working for their king or noble (OI). Nobles and kings had knights called vassals (OI). Vassals were knights who protected and served kings and nobles in exchange for land (OI).
The missionaries in India allowed for Christianity to spread and flourish in the world. Without the search, colonization, and conversion of India, the world we know today would be delayed if not nonexistent. European exploration began during the Middle Ages. During the late 13th century, Italian explorer Marco Polo went on a 25-year overland journey through Mongolia and Japan in search of a route to the Far East for trading textiles and spices. By the mid-14th century, the Ottoman Empire had conquered most of the area between Europe and the Far East, and Arab traders were charging expensive fees for their spices.
In the Middle Ages, the power of people impacted the society, because of the Feudal System. In other words, the rankings of people. There were four groups. The Kings and Queens were at the top, then the nobles, the knights, and last peasants and serfs(Doc. 1). Serfs and peasants had very little land given and they even had to provide food that they farmed for the knights and nobles.
By the end of the 1400s, many European ships left Europe to explore the world. This exploration could have been initiated by various events that occurred previously. Starting with the first event, the Black Death, in the 1300s, which caused the decline of the feudal system and lead to the rise of the Renaissance era, a period of time when people were craving for more knowledge in topics such as philosophy, anatomy, geography, etc. It was throughout this Renaissance period and because of new inventions such as the printing press that could have caused people to want to explore and expand their knowledge about the geography of the earth. The Crusades We have all heard about the Crusades whether you are Christian or not. But why? Maybe it was because of the estimated 1.7 million people that died between 1096 and 1348 CE. Maybe it was the fact that the war started over a small “promised land” called Jerusalem, that the Christians though was rightfully theirs. Maybe it was because you are Muslim or Christian and were taught about it from a young age, because this affected your ancestors a lot.

Also during this time period, The Age of Exploration had begun. Europe was trying to discover new and faster ways of reaching India. In the process, they found the Americas, along with other routes to Africa and Asia.

Another reason why the middle ages were referred to as dark is because of the decline in production of culture. “The passage illustrates medieval education, which was provided primarily at monasteries or church schools and was not available to most people” (Doc E). This was the adapters note from a passage about a monk who went to Chartres to study Hippocrates and it says how education was not provided for most people, which explains why there was a decline in culture because only very little could get educated. “I learned the ordinary symptoms of diseases and picked up surface knowledge of ailments.
