Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa, Italy in 1564. He was born to Vincenzo and Giulia Galilei. His father was a very well known musician; he was a music theorist, lutenist and composer. Galileo’s learned the art of the lute from his father and was very accomplished with the instrument. Galilei was the eldest of six children, however, only three of his siblings survived past infancy due to the the high mortality rate in the 16th century. Galileo was a devout Catholic but he often did not follow the laws of the Catholic church. For example, he had three children out of wedlock with a woman named Marina Gamba. The two had a son, Vincenzo, named after Galileo's father, and two daughters, Virginia and Livia. Due to the fact that these children were born out of wedlock, Galileo did not see it fit for the two girls to marry so he sent them to the convent. He is also considered the “father of modern physics.” He was an incredible scientist and was an important figure in the scientific revolution during the seventeenth century. Galileo was a mathematician, physicist, engineer, and a philosopher. He has many significant accomplishments however perhaps his most impressive was his discovery that the earth traveled around the sun. Prior to this the Catholic church taught that all planets and the sun circulated around the earth. To state anything different than what the church believed was consider hierarchy and worthy of persecution. Galileo was condemned by the catholic church in 1633 for his geocentric views and therefore slander against the teaching of the church.
