On the 18th of August, in the year 1920 the nineteenth amendment was ratified. This finally allowed women the right to vote, after protesting for so long. In October of 1929, the stock market crashed, after so long having been great. This began the whole great depression. Herbert Hoover was president at the time.The famous actress, Shirley Temple, was born in 1928. Amelia Earhart was a popular and important person in the 1920’s. Being the first woman to make a transatlantic flight, she became a national celebrity. Woodrow Wilson was president in this time period, in addition to Herbert Hoover.He helped lead the United States during the depression. He saved many from poverty and hunger. Louis Glass and William S. Arnold invented the jukebox. Walter E. Diemer invented a superior formulation for bubble gum. He called this double-bubble.Clarence Birdseye invented frozen food in 1929. Karl Paul Reinhold Niebuhr was a popular philosopher at the time. He is known for Christian Realism. Niebuhr argued that the Kingdom of God cannot be realized on Earth because of the innately corrupt tendencies of society. Niebuhr argued that human perfectibility was an illusion. Many people disagreed with him on this. In 1921, Guccio Gucci and his wife, Aida, opened their 1st store in Florence. All clothing increased in the variety of colors. Women no longer often wore corsets. Some women dressed as flappers, as this trend started in the 1920’s. The men would wear high waisted jackets with belts, and still commonly wore hats.
