In his essay, “Becoming a Writer,” Russell Baker explains how something you love can turn into a daunting task. Baker explains that while he loved writing, and even considered himself a writer, he still dreaded his English classes in High School. He felt the assignments were dull and procrastinated to complete most of the assignments. This continued until almost all the way through his third year of High School, towards the end of the year Baker was assigned to write an informal essay based on a list of topics. The night before the assignment was due Baker finally pulled out the homework sheet and started perusing the list of topics.
We aren’t taught to just begin a task without an exact goal in mind. But this method can sometimes lead to the discovery of an even greater reward. In today’s society, we as writers are trained from an early age to reach a set objective by any means necessary. But when looking back on this concept, aren’t we missing the whole point of completing the assignment in the first place? In this paper, I will adopt this notion of starting a piece of writing without a specific end result in mind, in the hopes of discovering myself as a writer and developing a powerful paper in the process.
The University of Alabama’s graduate program in Composition and Rhetoric would allow me to reach my goals in becoming an English teacher within the community college system. As a non-traditional student my journey to higher education started at a community college. I quickly noticed that where college students in that system struggled the most was when it came to their skills in writing. Writing is great until you have to sit down and do it. The sentences never seem to flow into the brilliant paragraphs I had planned for them, and descriptions never build the picture the way it was drawn up in my head. I have never been entirely confident in my ability, probably for good reason. That said, I have always had a love hate relationship with writing; I can sit down and crank out a report on my high school’s basketball team in a half an hour, on the other hand I had to write limericks in my seventh grade English class and I am still working on them.
Throughout this summer, I have grown not only as a writer but as a person. This class as well as my other English class have taught me numerous things. These two English courses have increased my skills as a reader, writer, and thinker. From learning about the Civil Rights Movement, important authors, and researching topics such as nature versus nurture, each have played a role into developing me into a better person.
After reading Stephen King's essay "Reading to Write" (72) it opened my eyes for writing. Although being a professional novelist isn't a goal I want to pursue in my life, writing is something I will need to learn how to do with good form. When it comes to the writing department, it's not one of my best skills. King says, "Good writing, teaches the learning writer about style, graceful narration, plot development, the creation of believable characters, and truth-telling" (73). I will try my best to become a good writer.

The 2017 AP Language and Composition course was purely correlated to challenging prospering to potential readers and writers. Its evidential goal was designed to build a basis of using appropriate rhetoric devices as to make his or her idea tangible to others. Although our “particular” class was very outspoken at times, overall I do believe we know how to better communicate our insights through both writings and in speech than we did at the beginning of the year. Unlike any year of English’s class, I concur that we grew in our level of proficiency as a writer and in our progress as a critical reader. Nevertheless, personally, I would like to believe that I’m well-suited in getting an A for both effort and skill based qualifications.

Tawney Nodland – As I look back over the past semester of English Composition, I realize that I have grown as a writer. Not onlyhas my understanding of the writing process changed, my whole attitude towards composition has too. This composition course has made a significant impact on my learning experience and has given me tools to take forward into my future educational and professional goals. My feelings toward writing aren 't good nor bad. Writing is something i have had difficulty with in my past. I have no problem brainstorming ideas on what topics to write my assignments on, even if i am given a prompt, but I do have difficulty with sitting down and planning my work. I always find myself getting stuck. So I almost never take the time out to plan out my ideas i come up with.
