What Are The Arguments Against School Dress Codes

Dress codes laws were established in 1969 in order to provide an effective and safe learning environment at school. During this time, as subcultures arose, schools wanted to stop students from wearing gang-related clothing, clothing that promoted drug use, and other apparel that disrupted the learning environment. Dress codes helped minimize student expression and promote uniformity throughout the students. Currently, many schools prohibit clothing that is seen as revealing or obscene, for example, leggings and shorts. Over the past years, school dress codes have unfairly targeted certain females. In many instances, females who are taller or have curvier figures are penalized for breaking dress code rules, while a female of a smaller frame, wearing similar clothes is not. These are times when girls are focused on learning and friends. As a girl’s body starts to develop the last thing they want to worry about is school dress codes. There are instances when girls are pulled out of class or have to go home because of their apparel. This can cause girls to focus away from education and begin to struggle in their classes. Dress codes have humiliated many girls when they are told they cannot wear certain clothes. Some girls also complain that dress codes are not as strict with boys as with girls. Boys can wear shorts and muscle shirts without penalty, even if the rules state otherwise, while girls have various limitations. Not only do boys have fewer penalties with the dress codes, but they are one of the primary reasons why girls cannot freely wear what they prefer. Boys influence what girls should not be
