The first significant action of the Civil War was the First Bull Run battle also known as Battle of first Manassas that took place on July 21, 1861 led by General Irvin McDowell for the Union states and General P.G.T. Beauregard for the Confederate states. First major battle of the American Civil war that would take place in Virginia just north of the Manassas; it would be known as a chaotic battle fought by inexperience volunteers and organizations that were short of training and haphazardly equipped.
