In this 4 year span over 620,000 Americans were killed about half of all Americans ever killed in wars. The first major battle of the Civil war was the first Battle Bull run. The Battle of Bull Run was fought in Prince William County, V.A and Fairfax County, VA between the Army of the Potomac (Union) and the Army of Northern Virginia (Confederacy). The Commanders for the Union were Irvin McDowell (Major General). The Confederate commander were P.G.T Beauregard (General) and Joseph E. Johnston (General).
The first major battle of the American Civil War is known as the First Battle of Bull Run. The battle took place approximately 25 miles from Washington D.C. near Manassas Junction, Virginia on July 21st, 1861 (First Battle of Bull Run, 2011). The battle was between the Union Army, troops from the North and the Confederate Army, troops from the South. This battle revealed, “the war would not be won by one grand battle, and both sides began preparing for a long and bloody conflict” (Ballard, 2007, p. 46).
The Civil War was a battle of great importance to our history of the United States. On April 12th, 1861 this battle broke out between the Union States, North, and the Confederate States, such as the South. The Civil War took place all throughout the United states, and did not come to an end until the Union won the war on May 9, 1856. So, our question of “What caused the Civil War”, comes with three important answers. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were Economic, Social, and Political differences.

Uncompromising differences between the South (Confederacy) and the North (Union) created a civil war that lasted five years. During this war, Abraham Lincoln was president. His election led to the secession of many Southern states. After refusing to recognize the Confederacy as its own nation, the American Civil War commenced in 1861. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were industrial and agricultural economies, politics, and slavery.
On July 21,1861, the Union and Confederate armies engaged in a battle near Manassas Junction, Virginia. The First Battle of Bull Run was the first major land battle during the Civil War. The battle began when almost 35,000 Union troops marched from the capital of Washington, D.C. to run into a Confederate force of 20,000 along a small river known as Bull Run. After fighting with the Unions for most of the day, the rebels assembled and were able to break the Union right flank, sending the Federals into a rampageous retreat towards Washington. The Confederate victory gave the South a gush of confidence and also shocked many people in the North, who then realized that the victory would be tougher than they planned it would be.
While the Battle at Fort Sumter was the initial battle that signified the beginning of the Civil War, The First Battle of Bull Run, or the Battle of Manassas was the first major battle and took place on July 21, 1861. The army consisted of 90-day volunteers, including common men. These soldiers were not aware of what they had signed up for.

This war was caused by sectionalism, the separation between these two areas because of their differences in what they believe in. This separation was caused by the constant disputes over who gets what land, an unbalanced economy which favored certain things, and the most relevant issue of the time being slavery. One of the relevant clauses for the Civil War was the disputers over new land. The disputes were always debated as the confederates wanted new land towards slave territory and the union wanted the land to be free.

Slavery was a huge part of it and it led to the Missouri Compromise where any states below the border would be slave states and the anything north of that was free states.
