Mia Kalinowski 03/17/23 Extended Response Complications Within The Annex The time period from 1933 until 1945 is known as the Holocaust, a mass genocide of innocent Jews. The Holocaust started once the Nazi party led by Adolf Hitler came to power in German occupied Europe. Jews would flee their home countries or go into hiding to save themselves from the horrific events that came to place. Anne Frank was an example of someone who went into hiding with her family. They stayed in a compact annex above her father’s work with seven other scared Jews for over two years. While hiding in the annex, they faced many challenges. In this scene Anne has one of her first interactions with Peter, it occurs in the early morning of July of 1942. “What’s your cat’s name? Moushi. Moushi! Moushi! Moushi! (She picks up the cat, walking away with it.) I love cats. Is yours a he or a she?” To which Peter replies, “He is a tom, he doesn’t like strangers” while taking Moushi back from her. When Anne jumps back at him saying, “Then I’ll have to stop being a stranger won’t I?” This shows Anne and Peter’s different interests as well as priorities. Anne wants to become closer with the other members of the annex and get to know them better. While Peter isn’t as well interested in the others in the annex and gets annoyed with Annes bright and once in a while exasperating personality. Anne tries to talk to Peter about his cat, Moushi while he would rather keep to himself and seemed to be dreading the conversation. Even though there was no formal argument within this scene, this helps show how Anne and Peter have definitely had the most conflict between the children of the annex due to their contradicting personalities. Dussel moved in with the Van Daans and the Franks. Mr. Dussel is a middle aged man who enjoys and needs sleep. While Anne is a thirteen year old girl who has nightmares. This shows how different Dussel and Anne are, although it’s the only space for Mr. Dussel to sleep in the tight annex. Anne and Mr. Dussel also had much conflict in the annex. It is pretty unusual for a thirteen year old and a middle aged dentist to share a room. The age difference, personality, maturity levels, and space made it really difficult for Anne and Dussel to share a room in peace.
