WEEK 7 Response IRIKAA PILANIA ARC540_HUMAN CONTEXT The community is important, people create communities for themselves (clubs, fraternities etc.) buildings built for such purposes are later reused for some other purpose. One of the major element of this community is a learning network which achieved in form of school/ shops. The right setting for a child is the community itself, just as the right setting for an infant learning to speak in his own home.
Students can click on any landmark to learn more about the landmark and see photographs of each place. I would use this as an interactive extension, as well as a computer lab activity for a day. In the first chapter of Brian Shultz’s Spectacular Things Happen along the Way, Shultz creates a curriculum where the students get to choose how and what they should learn. Shultz made the students figure out an issue in their community that they would like to improve, and the students decided that they want a new school facility. He lets the students decide how they should go about getting this new school facility and as a result he gives the students the opportunity to examine their cultural backgrounds and how they have experienced being born into that culture. In the lecture, Community Engaged Research in the San Joaquin: Impact through Collaboration, instructs by Doctor Stergios Roussos he provides the ideal method that could solve the issues in Merced such as child poverty, food insecurity and high unemployment. Most of my field work has been in The Akron Public School District which has allowed me to gain a lot of experience with urban youth students in the Akron area. I have been placed into preschool, Kindergarten, 1st grade, 5th grade, 6th grade, and high school classrooms which has allowed me to be given a wide variety of experiences with teachers and students. During my placement in the preschool classroom, I was able to learn about the importance of including lessons that enrich each area of a child’s development. While working with the Kindergarten students, I was able to observe a classroom that was run based on centers and small group instruction. I enjoyed working with the students in this classroom as many of the centers were game based which established a fun way for the students to learn.
The diversity of student backgrounds, abilities and learning styles makes each person unique in the way he or she reacts to information. The intersection of diverse student backgrounds and active learning needs a comfortable, positive environment in which to take root. Dr. King continues by explaining, “Education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.” From back then to today’s society, kids are failing because they lack those morals that they need to succeed.
